An Original Vintage Linenbacked Circus Poster (measures 18 1/4" x 28" [46 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Circus, a 1943 circus poster ("Merle Evans Director of Music"; "The Greatest Show on Earth") featuring art of the "Bandwagon". Merle Evans was a cornet player and circus band conductor who conducted the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus for fifty years. Evans was inducted into the American Bandmasters Association in 1947 and the International Circus Hall of Fame in 1975. The modern version of the circus started in 1919 when the Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth, a circus created by P. T. Barnum and James Anthony Bailey, was merged with the Ringling Bros. World's Greatest Shows. With weakening attendance and high operating costs, the circus closed on May 21st, 2017 after 146 years. Artist: Bill Bailey Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny stains and tiny bits of paper loss across the top of the bottom white border and in the yellow border above it, where a paper snipe was likely once attached. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
