Note that United Artists was afraid that audiences would not respond to this story of a dedicated unmarried teacher, so they promoted it like a tawdry romance, with the lurid taglines "SHOULD I have loved the way I did? ...I offered my heart to him when he knew so much of love, and I knew so little." and "Shall I cast aside a lifetime of love - for one tawdry moment in a man's past?"!
