In 1946, Masaru Ibuka started an electronics shop, and was soon joined by Akio Morita to found a company called Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo. In 1958, the company changed its name to Sony. Sony was a mix of two words, the Latin word "sonus", and "sonny" (in 1950s Japan "sonny boys" referred to smart and presentable young men). Today, Sony's diversified business includes consumer and professional electronics, gaming, entertainment and financial services. The company is one of the leading manufacturers of electronic products, and was ranked 105th on the 2017 list of Fortune Global 500.
