An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41") (Learn More)

He Walked by Night, the 1948 Alfred L. Werker Los Angeles California crime film noir thriller ("From the homicide files of the Los Angeles Police"; "Savage! Searing! True!"; "Savage TRUTH! Stronger than Fiction!"; "In the watery darkness of the massive sewers that wind tortuously beneath Los Angeles a man flees for his life. Now he stops - waiting, listening, his finger tense about the trigger of his gun. Suddenly - he whirls - fires blindly into the blackness! The thundering blast echoes and re-echoes through the tunnel, bouncing maddeningly from wall-to-wall, and in the blazing flash we see him - Savage, brutal - this is the killer who has struck again and again - the killer the police have hunted, patiently, skillfully, courageously - relentlessly tying each tiny clue, every shred and strand of evidence into an evertightening net. Now it's closing... they have him cornered again, fighting desperately for his life... deadly, defiant, unafraid!"; "He held a loaded gun at the heart of a great city!"; "Original Story by Crane Wilbur"; the movie is told in a documentary style fashion with narration, and the viewer follows the police's efforts, a technique which has been much imitated since!) starring Richard Basehart, Scott Brady (billed as "Scott 'Canon City' Brady"), Roy Roberts, Whit Bissell, James Cardwell, and Jack Webb. Note that this movie gave Jack Webb one of his first significant roles, but more significantly, he adapted the documentary-style of this movie when he created his Dragnet radio show the following year (which of course later moved to television with great success). This movie can be seen as the precursor to all of the modern police shows like "Law and Order", even though it is only remembered by film buffs today.

Condition: good to very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds. There was a rectangular area of paper loss in the center of the top border extending into the blue background. There were a few tiny tears in the top 8" of the vertical foldline. There was some purple writing on the back of the top of the vertical foldline and it lightly bled through in the blue background above Basehart's shoulder. There was minor wear on the other foldlines and many pinholes around the edges of the poster. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but the restorer left alone the slight purple bleed through in the top center background area (it is not very noticeable or distracting, and any restorer could touch it up without re-backing the poster).
