An Original Vintage Linenbacked French Stage Play Poster (measures 47 1/4" x 62 1/4" [120 x 158 cm]) (Learn More)

La Loupiote (literally translates to "The Female Child"), the 1900s French circus clown orphan stage play production (of the play by Arthur Bernede, based on a novel by Aristide Bruant which was first published in "Le Journal"). Note that this poster features Francisque Poulbot art of a circus performer holding a toddler as a clown looks on. Also, note that Aristide Bruant was a French cabaret singer, comedian, and nightclub owner who is likely best-known as the man in the red scarf and black cape featured on famous posters by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Artist: d'apres Francisque Poulbot
Important Added Info: Note that this poster reuses the Francisque Poulbot art from an earlier printing of a French poster, but because it was not the first time the art was used, the poster designer added "d'apres", to signify that. We are guessing the poster is from the early 1900s, and that the earlier printing would have been from the 1890s, but that is only a guess. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The entire poster had darkened. It had some tears in the top 6" of the poster. Either it had some other tears scattered in the lower part of the upper image, or they were acquired after the poster was backed. It also had some small areas of paper loss in the bottom right and lower left that also might have been acquired before or after it was backed. It also had some paper loss and stains around the edges. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking (depending on when the above defects were acquired). Obviously, thep oster could have additional restoration performed (either with or without re-backing the poster), but bear all of this in mind before bidding.
