Date Sold 4/16/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Movie Window Card (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) Of Human Bondage, the classic 1934 John Cromwell man-obsessed-with-trashy-woman-who-treats-him-as-badly-as-anyone-has-ever-been-treated romantic melodrama ("The love that lifted a man to paradise.. and hurled him back to earth [sic] again!"; "From the novel by W. Somerset Maugham"; "W. Somerset Maugham's world famous novel") starring Leslie Howard (as Philip Carey), Bette Davis (note that because Bette Davis was a Warner Bros star, and because she was "loaned" to RKO to make the movie, Warner executives saw to it that she wasn't even nominated for the Best Actress Oscar [for the only time in Oscar history, there was a major effort to have her still win by being a "write-in" candidate, but that failed, which was likely the greatest travesty in the history of the Academy Awards!]; as so often happens, Davis was given the Best Actress Oscar the following year for Dangerous, as a "consolation" prize for being robbed the year before!; as Mildred), Frances Dee, Kay Johnson, Reginald Denny, Alan Hale Sr., and Reginald Owen. Note that this movie was remade twice, in 1946 with Eleanor Parker and in 1964 with Kim Novak, and while both those actresses did excellent jobs, Davis' performance remains the definitive one! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two example of this window card, and the last one sold for $1,326! Also note that RKO was likely afraid of both the subject matter of this movie, and also the nature of Davis' character, because this window card has wonderful artwork of Davis and Howard, but you certainly get no impression of her character's true nature from this image! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a heavy paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair to good. Prior to paperbacking, the top 6" and the right 2" of the window card were neatly trimmed off (likely because it was found in the back of a picture frame as a backing board). The part that remained was in pretty nice condition prior to paperbacking. A REALLY talented restorer recreated the missing areas, which included the very top of the credits and the top of Davis' hair and eyebrow, and also the right of her dress and the right edge of the title and credits at lower right. The card displays well, and we would think many people would not realize the extent of the restoration, even looking at it close up, but please do not bid on this card unless you can accept the above.
