An Original 1920 (likely printed in Italy for the first release in Germany; see below) Vintage Italian Movie Souvenir Program Book (measures 7 1/2" x 10 1/4" [19 x 26 cm]; 40 pages) (Learn More) Cabiria, the 1914 Giovanni Pastrone Italian silent Sicily/Spain historical adventure family relationship epic (based on the book by Titus Livus; screenplay by Gabriele D'Annunzio, who received huge billing before the title!) starring Emilio Vardannes, Marcellina Bianco (in the title role as young Cabiria, later Elissa the slave), Teresina Maragoni, Umberto Moszato, Ernesto Pagani (as Maciste, the slave), Didaco Chellini and Edouard Davesnes (as Hannibal and Hasdrubal), Dante Testa (as Karthalo, High Priest of Moloch), Lidia Quaranta (billed as "Lydia Quaranta"; as the adult Slave Elissa, formerly Cabiria), and Ernesto Gemelli (as Archimedes). Note that this movie was one of the very first feature films (predating "The Birth of a Nation" by a year), and it was a true epic, beginning with a volcano (Mount Etna) exploding in Sicily, and then covering many years, and bringing in real life historical characters like Hannibal, and it even included Maciste, who would later star in numerous Italian movies throughout the years! The movie was released in the U.S. just two months after its Italian premiere, and its great success surely influenced American filmmakers (especially D.W. Griffith) to create major feature films of their own. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Achille Lucien Mauzan Important Added Info: Note that this souvenir program book is for this 1914 Italian movie, but it was printed in Italy, entirely in German, and since the movie apparently premiered in Germany in 1920, we are thinking it was likely printed in Italy in 1920 for that first German release (but of course, that information could be wrong, and it might have opened in Germany in 1914). It has great cover art by Achille Lucien Mauzan, who was a legendary French illustrator, who spent much of his life in France, Italy, and Buenos Aires, and he designed over 2,000 posters over his long career between the early 1900s and 1952. The program book also has great interior illustrations which are not signed, but could also be by Mauzan, or they could be by a different artist (see our images). The book also has a supplement page of screenplay author Gabriele D'Annunzio (see our image). Condition: good to very good. There are stains around the edges of the cover, but otherwise, the program is in nice condition! Learn More about condition grades
