An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Style A One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Samuel Goldwyn's The Best Years of Our Lives, the classic 1946 William Wyler (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) return-from-World War II (WWII) romantic love triangle military veteran melodrama ("From the Novel by MacKinlay Kantor"; "The screen's greatest love story"; "Acclaimed by critics as 'The greatest picture to come from Hollywood in a long time'"; "Love that lives forever! Love that ends in hate!"; "Love that meets the test!"; winner of the Best Picture Academy Award; about three servicemen returning from World War II and the difficulties they face in returning to civilian life after years at war; one of the three is a man who lost his hands during the war, and he was played by a real life veteran) starring Myrna Loy, Fredric March (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film), Dana Andrews, Teresa Wright, Virginia Mayo, Hoagy Carmichael (the famous singer and composer in a fine acting role), Cathy O'Donnell, Harold Russell (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film; the real-life veteran who lost his hands in WWII; he also won an Oscar for being an inspiration to all veterans, which makes him the only actor to win two Oscars for the same role!; O'Donnell & Russell are billed as "And introducing"), Steve Cochran, Gladys George, and Roman Bohnen. Note that this movie premiered in the U.S. in November of 1946 (no doubt to qualify for the Academy Awards), but all of the U.S. paper has a 1947 NSS number. Also note that Gladys George and Roman Bohnen played Dana Andrews' lower class parents, and gave fine performances. It is remarkable that Bohnen (a fine actor who looked much older than his actual age) was only six years older than Andrews, playing his father! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that producer Samuel Goldwyn was clearly afraid of the subject matter of this movie (returning veterans and their difficulties after World War II), both because of the possible controversy, and also he was likely afraid that people would be "turned off" by the handless veteran at the center of the movie. So next-to-none of the advertising for the movie shows or mentions Harold Russell, and some of the advertising is amazingly deceptive, passing off the movie as looking like a romantic triangle comedy! The style B one-sheet shows only Virginia Mayo, Dana Andrews, and Teresa Wright, and no one could possibly guess what the movie was truly about from seeing this poster (although those three actors DO form a romantic triangle in the movie, it is a small sub-plot, and certainly not the main focus of the movie by any means)! Most collectors feel this style A one-sheet, which has nice portraits of the top five stars (but no Harold Russell or Hoagy Carmichael) is one of the best posters there is from this most classic movie. Condition: fair to good. The poster had a semi-circular tear next to the middle crossfold which unfortunately fell around March's eye. Someone put a piece of tape on the back, and that slightly bleeds through to the front. There is separation and small paper loss at the bottom crossfold and tiny separation at the top crossfold. There are two 5" tears near the center of the bottom border, with some small paper loss. There are tears and small paper loss around the edges, with many creases scattered through the poster, and a few smudges and stains. Obviously, a talented restorer could "rescue" this poster, but bear the above defects and the cost of restoring them in mind before placing a bid! Learn More about condition grades
