An Original 1947 (from the first release of this movie in Italy) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Italian One-Panel (known in Italy as a "2 Fogli") Movie Poster (1p; measures 39" x 55" [99 x 140 cm]) (Learn More) The Big Sleep, the classic 1946 Howard Hawks romantic crime film noir ("The picture they were born for!"; "A Warner hit!!!"; "From the novel by Raymond Chandler"; "Screen Play by William Faulkner, Leigh Brackett & Jules Furthman") starring Humphrey Bogart (as Philip Marlowe), Lauren Bacall, John Ridgely, Martha Vickers, Dorothy Malone, Louis Jean Heydt, Charles Waldron, Charles D. Brown, Bob Steele, Tom Fadden, Ben Welden, and Sonia Darrin. Note that not only did this movie have the direction of Howard Hawks and the great star power of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, but it also had the brilliant Raymond Chandler source novel, and a screenplay written by three great writers: Faulkner, Brackett, and Furthman! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Luigi Martinati Important Added Info: Note that we only previously auctioned an example of this poster once before, and this is only the second example of this poster that we have ever auctioned (although it is the second time we are auctioning this very poster; see below). Note that we auctioned this poster in our December 2023 Major Auction and something happened that almost never happens in eMoviePoster.com auctions. The high bidder disappeared and never paid, and they had bought an expensive poster from us before. So that is a mystery to us (perhaps they passed away), but we are now re-auctioning it in this auction, and of course, it starts at $1, so there is a chance it could auction for far less than it did in December! Note that Italian posters from the first few years after World War II are among the most rare posters there are! Apparently, there were still major paper shortages in Italy, and few posters were printed, and most were recycled! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and very minor fold and border wear. Overall, the poster was in very good to fine condition prior to linenbacking. After the poster was backed, it acquired a tiny bit of surface paper loss in the middle left, in the edge of the blue background next to the dark border (see our image). It would be the simplest matter for any restorer to touch up that area without re-backing the poster, or certainly, the new owner could simply live with it. Other than this tiny defect, the poster was and is in really nice condition, very unusual for Italian posters from this time period! Learn More about condition grades
