A Linenbacked French Advertising Poster (measures 45" x 62" [114 x 157 cm]) (Learn More) Bonal Gentiane-Quina is an alcoholic aperitif created by Hyppolite Bonal in 1865. The drink often has the slogan "ouvre l'appetit" ("the key to the appetite"), and was an early sponsor of the Tour de France. It is made by an infusion of gentian, cinchona (quinine) and herbs of the Grande Chartreuse mountains in a mistelle base. Artist: A.M. Cassandre Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare pre-World War II French poster, which we have never auctioned before! Virtually no French posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II. Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all pre-World War II posters! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The poster was never folded. It had a 6" tear and a 2" tear in the upper right background, with some paper loss on those tears. It had a few creases and scuffs scattered in the image. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. Unfortunately, after the poster was backed, it became water stained, and it affected the bottom of the poster and the linen, extending into the title, as seen in our image. Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept this significant defect. Learn More about condition grades
