Date Sold 5/3/2012Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Special Poster (measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Juke Joint, the 1947 Spencer Williams black African American comedy ("The joint Is jumpin' and everybody's happy and high!"; "The joint is jumpin'! The jive is jivvin'! The jam is jammin'! Holiday Family!"; "Original Story by True T. Thompson") starring July Jones, Spencer Williams, Inez Newell, Leonard Duncan, Dauphine Moore, Melody Duncan, Katherine Moore, Red Calhoun's Orchestra, The Jitterbug Johnnies with Mac and Ace, and Kit and Kat. Note that this movie was filmed in both San Antonio and Dallas, Texas, and also in "Harlemwood", New York, and it seems that the producers rounded up every all-black music act they could find to perform at the "joint" in this film, and it seems that all of those musical acts never made another movie! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Finally, note that the word "juke" originally meant "bad" or "wicked" (it was brought over by slaves from West Africa), and a "juke joint" was a place that served liquor or was a brothel, or had gambling, or some combination of the three! The word became used in mainstream language when machines that played records were called juke boxes, but the people who called them that did not know the origin of the word. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we really have no clue what this poster is! It is on a heavy window card-like stock, and it looks like it was trimmed in the top and bottom (likely it was trimmed to 11" x 14" so it would fit in a lobby card frame). It might have been a window card (possibly part of a double-bill) and maybe it was used when a theater was only showing the one movie. We don't know if it is from 1947 or from a re-release, but if so, it would surely be from the 1940s or 1950s, because it is clearly vintage to that era. Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept the uncertainty as to its origins and original size. Condition: good. The card appears to have been trimmed . There is a stain in the right border. We don't know for sure if it is trimmed or what the original full poster looked like. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Learn More about condition grades
