An Undated (probably 1980s) Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel Movie Poster (measures approximately 47" x 63"; known as a 'grande' poster in France) (Learn More) Alfred Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief, the 1955 Alfred Hitchcock romantic crime mystery thriller ("It's a web of romance and suspense that spins you from delight to danger - then spirals to an explosive climax on the fabulous Riviera!"; "Based on the novel by David Dodge"; "Screenplay by John Michael Hayes"; about a retired jewel thief living on the Riviera, and there is a string of daring jewel robberies, so naturally, he is the lead suspect, and he decides to find the true thief himself, and he is aided by a beautiful rich young woman and her mother!) starring Cary Grant, Grace Kelly, Jessie Royce Landis, John Williams, Charles Vanel, Brigitte Auber, Rene Blancard, Georgette Anys, and Jean Martinelli. Note that Cary Grant had announced his retirement from movies in 1953, but he was lured out of retirement by Hitchcock to make this one. Also note that Jessie Royce Landis, who had played Grant's mother in "North by Northwest", this time played his potential mother-in-law, and yet, she was only eight years older than Grant, who had aged very well! Important Added Info: Note that, for this 1980s French re-release, the French distributors of the movie gave classic French actor Charles Vanel equal billing to Cary Grant and Grace Kelly! Also note that, for this 1980s re-release, the distributor re-used the image from an earlier French poster, and they reproduced it from an actual example of the poster, so there are reproduced foldlines within the image (but they are not defects within the poster itself). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had tiny paper loss on some foldlines and a 3" tear in the area between the chins of the stars, with a 3" light scuff mark continuing from the end of that tear into Kelly's cheek. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer linenbacked the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, but they are really not at all distracting (and any restorer could easily touch them up without re-backing the poster).
