An Original 1927 Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Die Freudlose Gasse (released in the U.S. in 1927 as "Streets of Sorrow" and also as "The Joyless Street"), the 1925 Georg Wilheim Pabst (G.W. Pabst) German silent post-World War I (WWI) Austria Depression era melodrama (about the effects of the Depression on an ordinary street in Vienna, and how one crooked butcher makes the lives everyone who lives on the street miserable) starring ("An All Star Cast Including") Asta Nielsen, Werner Krauss, Einar Hanson, Karl Etlinger, Jaro Furth, and a host of actors in minor roles as residents of the street, including a very young Greta Garbo, in her 7th film appearance. After she went to the United States the following year and became a major star, this movie was released in the U.S. in 1927, over two years after it was made. The U.S. distributor released it with a large image of Garbo and she was billed above the title as "Greta Garbo in 'Streets of Sorrow'" (which was incredibly deceptive advertising, because of her relatively minor role)! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have previously auctioned several scene lobby cards from the U.S. release of this movie (and NO other movie paper), but we have never before auctioned this title card! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: good to very good. The card had a 6" clean diagonal tear starting in the left of the top border and going down the left side of Garbo's face, through the left of her eye, and the left corner of her mouth, and ending in her chin. It had some tiny pinholes. It had a 2" tear near the middle of the right border. It had small paper loss in three blank corners and a pinhole in the fourth blank corner. It had a 1/2" tear in the left of the bottom border. The card had a faint horizontal crease in the upper left extending into Garbo's hair. Overall, the card was in good to very good condition prior to restoration. A really talented restorer gel backed the card and mended the 6" tear and the other small tears described above, and they did so expertly, to where you really are not aware of them looking at the front of the card (but you can clearly see where they were by looking at the back of the card). This extremely rare card displays well, but look closely at our super-sized images before bidding on it. Learn More about condition grades
