Date Sold 7/12/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original 1939 (from the first release of this movie in Italy) Vintage Theatrical Folded Italian One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27 1/2" x 39 1/2" [70 x 100 cm]) (Learn More) Of Human Bondage, the classic 1934 John Cromwell man-obsessed-with-trashy-woman-who-treats-him-as-badly-as-anyone-has-ever-been-treated romantic melodrama ("The love that lifted a man to paradise.. and hurled him back to earth [sic] again!"; "From the novel by W. Somerset Maugham"; "W. Somerset Maugham's world famous novel") starring Leslie Howard (as Philip Carey), Bette Davis (note that because Bette Davis was a Warner Bros star, and because she was "loaned" to RKO to make the movie, Warner executives saw to it that she wasn't even nominated for the Best Actress Oscar [for the only time in Oscar history, there was a major effort to have her still win by being a "write-in" candidate, but that failed, which was likely the greatest travesty in the history of the Academy Awards!]; as so often happens, Davis was given the Best Actress Oscar the following year for Dangerous, as a "consolation" prize for being robbed the year before!; as Mildred), Frances Dee, Kay Johnson, Reginald Denny, Alan Hale Sr., and Reginald Owen. Note that this movie was remade twice, in 1946 with Eleanor Parker and in 1964 with Kim Novak, and while both those actresses did excellent jobs, Davis' performance remains the definitive one! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Anselmo Ballester Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare Italian poster from during World War II (our consignor tells us he believes it is the only surviving example of this poster, and we can't guarantee that, but we have never auctioned it before)! Virtually no Italian posters survive from before, during, or right after World War II (mostly only some heavy stock lobby cards, and even those are rare). Apparently there were many paper shortages in Italy during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all posters from before World War II, and also from during the war, and the first few years afterwards! Also note that this Italian one-sheet measures 27 1/2" x 39 1/2" [70 x 100 cm]. Condition: very good. The poster has darkening and tack holes in the blank borders, and some scuffs on small parts of some folds. It has two small tax stamps in the top left corner, in the blank area. It has a crease running through the "AMORE" of the title, and a pair of slightly diagonal partial horizontal folds running through the upper center of the image. There are tiny bits of paper loss in parts of the edges of the left and right borders. I go into great detail on the defects this poster has because of its extreme rarity and desirability. Other than the above defects, it is in pretty nice condition, and I would say it has likely survived in as nice condition as one could hope! Learn More about condition grades
