With American, United, and Eastern, it was one of the "Big Four" domestic airlines in the United States. Howard Hughes acquired control of TWA in 1939, and after World War II (WWII) led the expansion of the airline to serve Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, making TWA a second unofficial flag carrier of the United States after Pan Am. In 2001, TWA filed for bankruptcy and was acquired by American Airlines. Important Added Info: What is offered here is REALLY cool! It is a special spiral-bound calendar that TWA had made in 1943, and it is really elaborate. There are separate pages for each month, and each one has a facing page with a full-color photographic image of a travel destination. The example we are offering is in really nice condition, and it even comes with the original mailing carton, which has a printed label from TWA (see our images). We can't imagine many of these have survived, and any that have are likely not in nearly as nice condition as this one is, because it was protected by the mailing carton.
