An Original 1921 (from the first Swedish release of this movie) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Swedish Movie Poster (measures 23 1/4" x 35 1/4") (Learn More) It Pays to Advertise, the 1919 Donald Crisp silent department store advertising comedy ("By Roi Cooper Megrue and Walter Hackett"; about a man named Cyrus who is wealthy and known as "the soap king," who cannot get his son Rodney to work. The man arranges for his pretty stenographer Mary [played by Lois Wilson] to attract his son so that he will have to work to be able to court her. When the stenographer and the man's son fall in love and decide to marry the man disinherits his son! Together with Mary and Ambrose Peale, a theatrical agent, Rodney opens a business and begins to advertise without a product. After he buys his father's soap and successfully packages it with his own label, Cyrus tries to buy out the company for $50,000, but he cancels the deal when he discovers that the soap came from his own factories. Meanwhile, Rodney, not knowing of the cancellation, has written a $25,000 check. To protect him, Cyrus secretly has a Marshall Field department store representative give Rodney a phony order, but when the soap sells well because of Rodney's advertising, and the store places more orders, Cyrus deals with Rodney, who now marries Mary!) starring Bryant Washburn, Lois Wilson, Walter Hiers, Frank Currier, and Clarence Geldart. Note that this is a "lost" film, which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Hakansson Important Added Info: Note that this Swedish poster has a cool surreal image of a man flying in a primitive hang glider (apparently this existed in the 19th century!), and the man is holding up a huge advertising banner so that all of a major city sees it. Since I can find out no information about the movie, I don't know if this is in any way based on an actual sequence within the movie, or if the Swedish artist Hakansson just used his imagination, based on knowing the name of the movie! This Swedish poster measures 23 1/4" x 35 1/4". Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked and during the backing process, its defects were repaired and it now looks nice. From any reasonable viewing distance, you can't see what restoration was done. It may have had only very minor defects, or it may have had more significant defects that were well restored. It is possible that you can see SOME slight traces of the restoration from a distance, but if so, we try clearly note it below. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "pre-restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). The poster was never folded. It was in excellent condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed, and looks great! Learn More about condition grades
