An Original Vintage Theatrical Kraftbacked Folded Three-Sheet Movie Poster (3sh; measures 41" x 81" [104 x 206 cm]) (Learn More)

A Close Call for Ellery Queen, the 1942 James P. Hogan detective crime mystery thriller ("Shiver with suspense!"; "Shudder with Terror"; "Scream with Excitement"; "A close call for Queen is a hurry call for mystery lovers!"; "Mystery in every shadow! Chills in every heart!"; "based on the famous series of detective novels written by Frederic Dannay and Manfred B. Lee", who together wrote under the pseudonym Ellery Queen) starring William Gargan (in the title role "as Ellery Queen"), Margaret Lindsay ("as Nikki Porter"), Charley Grapewin, Ralph Morgan, Kay Linaker, Edward Norris, and James Burke. Note that this classic series of novels first came to the screen in 1935, as a Monogram movie, called "The Spanish Cape Mystery", starring Donald Cook in the lead role. They followed it with a sequel the next year, replacing Cook with Eddie Quillan. Neither movie did that well at the box office, and Monogram dropped the series. Columbia bought the rights in 1940, when they made "Ellery Queen, Master Detective", with Ralph Bellamy taking over in the lead role, and six more movies were made the next two years, and then the series stopped again. A TV series "The Adventures of Ellery Queen", began in 1950 with Richard Hart in the lead role. The next season he was replaced by Lee Bowman, who lasted three years and then was replaced by Hugh Marlowe, who played the character for five years, and then the series ended. After a two year gap, "The Further Adventures of Ellery Queen" aired on TV starring George Nader for one season, and then Lee Philips for another season. The character was not revived until 1975, when Jim Hutton played the lead role in the TV series "Ellery Queen", but it only lasted one season.

Important Added Info: Note that first release large posters from this movie are extremely rare. We have never before auctioned a three-sheet from this movie before we were consigned this poster, and we have also never auctioned a six-sheet!

Note that this poster has been kraftbacked, which means it was backed onto a brown paper soon after it was printed (this process is called "kraft-backing", and posters with it are called "kraft-backed"). One could have it professionally removed from the kraft paper and linenbacked, and it would look great! Because of how this poster is folded, it needs to be sent in a large flat package that measures approximately 12" x 22".

Condition: good. The poster can be removed from the kraft backing and restored (see above). Bear this in mind before bidding.
