LA BELLE ET LA BETE ('46) LA BELLE ET LA BETE ('46) Belgian OR search current auctions Auction History Result VHP7 068 BEAUTY & THE BEAST linen Belgian movie poster '46 Jean Cocteau Date Sold 7/11/2004Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 15" x 19 1/2") (Learn More) La Belle et la Bete (released in the U.S. in 1947 as "The Beauty and the Beast"), the classic 1946 Jean Cocteau French romantic fantasy adventure (based on the classic fairy tale by Madame Leprince de Beaumont; about a handsome prince who has a spell put on him that turns him into a beast, and he can't change back unless a beautiful woman loves him as he is!) starring Jean Marais (in a dual role as both la Bete and the Prince), Josette Day (in the title role as Belle), Mila Parely, Nane Germon, Michael Auclair, and Marcel Andre. Note that this movie had wonderful special effects (both by 1946 standards, and even by present day standards) and that it is one of the best loved fantasy movies of all time. In 1991, Walt Disney turned this into an animated feature length musical, and it has since been turned into a Broadway show and a live action movie, but this version still remains the best of all! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this Belgian poster measures 15" x 19 1/2" and that it is linenbacked. It is also important to note that this is the only first release poster for this French fantasy classic that shows Jean Marais both as The Beast and as The Prince! Condition: No condition recorded. This poster was linenbacked, and the restorer did a good job, but you can see signs of the restoration from inches away (since most people look at posters framed on a wall from at least a few feet away, we don't feel this is a defect, but we feel it should be noted). See below for this poster's pre-restoration condition (we are the only major auction company we know of that shares this information with our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). good to very good. The poster's borders were carefully trimmed off, and the person who linenbacked the poster added new borders. There are two foldlines across the middle of the poster 1" apart. There were pinholes in the corners. The poster was nicely backed, but it is important to note that this poster was printed on the back of a map! This was due to paper shortages (this was common in France and Belgium in the 1930s and early 1940s). You can see faint signs of the back of the poster in Marais' and Day's faces, as the lines of the map very faintly show in the flesh-colored parts of their faces. From any distance away, however, this really is not at all distracting.
