A Vintage German Book (measures 9 1/4" x 12 1/4" [23 x 31 cm]; 136 pages) (Learn More) Vom Werden Deutcher Filmkunst: Der Stumme Film (literally translates to "The Making of German Cinematic Art: The Silent Film"), the 1935 German movie history album that was distributed by a company called Reemtsma documenting the history of the silent film industry in Germany. This company made a total of 24 albums like this between 1932 and 1940, but only this album and it's sequel (about sound films) were movie related. This album contains many black and white images (with a few full-color plates) with images of the movies and their stars, including: Metropolis (including a candid image of Fritz Lang directing Brigitte Helm and Heinrich George), The Golem, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Dr. Mabuse, Nosferatu, Svengali, Siegfried and Kriemhild, Die Nibelungen, Marlene Dietrich, Lillian Harvey, Leni Riefenstahl, Pola Negri, Emil Jannings, Walter Slezak, Conrad Veidt and many more (I have just described just a few of the many, many fascinating images here)! All of the images in this album are actually "tipped in" bookplates (pasted onto the pages), because this company distributed the albums and bookplates separately, and it was up to the buyer to paste them in. Note that the tipped-in bookplates measure two sizes (3 1/4" x 4 3/4" and 4 3/4" x 6 3/4"). Where in the world could anyone hope to get a large number of original German bookplates from the all-time German classics like Metropolis, The Golem, Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Caligari, and more? I suspect the answer is "nowhere"! Note that this album solely covers German silent movies (it is volume 1). After this, a volume 2 (that says "2 Teil: Der Tonfilm" on the title page) was published that solely covered sound movies! Finally, note that there are two versions of this book. They are extremely similar except one has a cover with a tipped-in color image at top center, and the other has an embossed gold mask in the same area. The one with the mask has a 1935 copyright at the bottom of the title page and the one with the tipped-in image on the cover is missing the date from that area, but is otherwise identical (we wonder if someone didn't notice that the copyright date was left off and that caused them to print more albums with it, or it is also possible that it could have been the other way around, that they originally printed it with the copyright date, but then printed them without it). The same exact situation exists with the second volume in this series (the one devoted to sound movies), where one version has a tipped-in image, and the other has an embossed gold mask on the cover. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this book is not quite a "hardcover" and not quite a "softcover", but sort of in-between (and it really is a spectacular publication!). Note: We have 17 images of this item, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 17 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 7. Condition: very good to fine. There is minor wear on the covers. There are faint creases in the top right blank corner and a tiny crease in the bottom right blank corner of all pages, but otherwise, the book is in really wonderful condition!
