An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) Flying Down to Rio, the classic 1933 Thornton Freeland South America Rio De Janeiro Brazil airplane aviation pilot romantic love triangle musical ("Musical Romance Staged in the Clouds..."; "Too big for the world... So they staged it in the clouds... Too beautiful for words... So they set it to music!"; "Come, take a joy ride through the sky!"; "Romance that soars on the wings of song") starring Dolores Del Rio, Gene Raymond, Paul Roulien, Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire, Blanche Friderici, and Margaret Earlich. Note that this was the first of the ten movies Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers made together, which explains why they were fourth and fifth billed, and not pictured on any poster art! Also note that this movie was made at a time when Hollywood had a "love affair" with South America in general, and Brazil (and Rio de Janeiro). Paul Roulien was a Brazilian singer who came to Hollywood in 1931, and he sang in several movies. In this movie, he was part of a romantic love triangle with Dolores Del Rio and Gene Raymond, and it was his best role. In 1934, he returned to Brazil and quit acting in 1938. Important Added Info: Note that original 1933 U.S. movie paper from this title is incredibly scarce, and on the rare occasions when it does surface, is also incredibly expensive. We auctioned a one-sheet 17 years ago and a different example of the window card 12 years ago, and other than that, we have not auctioned any first release U.S. movie paper, until now! Also note that this window card was never folded. Often window cards would be folded across the middle, because that would make them 11" x 14", and they could then be sent with standard folded posters. Most collectors put an added value on a window card that has never been folded. Condition: good. The window card was not backed, but it had stains and smudges scattered throughout, and some restorer bleached the card and put four tiny pieces of conservation tape on the back of three small tears in the borders and on the back of a pinhole in the top right airplane wing. They also put a 4" piece of conservation tape on the back of the middle left of the top border, where there were several pinholes. They did not put tape on the back of a 2" tear in the left of the top blank border or on the back of a 1" tear in the lower right border (or perhaps the card acquired those tears after the earlier tape was put on). The person who did the above also did some slight paint restoration in a very few areas. One was in the wing of the airplane at the top, one was to the right of Del Rio's eye, and one was over a pinhole at bottom center. There were a few other tiny areas in the image that received paint restoration and some slight paint restoration in the blank borders. If I owned this card, I would surely immediately send it to a talented professional and have them perform additional restoration, after which the card will look wonderful!
