An Original Vintage Theatrical Chapter #4 (The Shadow Strikes) Linen Mounted One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Whispering Shadow, the 1933 Al Herman & Colbert Clark (billed as "Bert Clark") horror crime murder mystery serial ("12 episodes of mystery, intrigue, and romance."; "Mascot Serials 'Blazing the Trail'"; "A serial thriller in twelve chapters"; about a criminal who commits murders through the clever use of television and radio waves, and a man whose brother was killed by that criminal, known as The Whispering Shadow, arrives to investigate his brother's death and his suspicions fall on the man who owns a creepy wax museum!) starring Bela Lugosi (in the title role as The Whispering Shadow), Henry B. Walthall, Karl Dane, Roy D'Arcy, Viva Tattersall, and Robert Warwick. Note that most of the lobby cards that have survived from this serial have a chapter title in the bottom border. There are also a few cards that are blank in that area. We suspect those are from a "feature" version of this serial. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of the chapter 1 one-sheet from this serial, 8 years ago and 21 years ago, when they sold for $5,060 and $2,144, but we have never before auctioned ANY other one-sheets until we were consigned this chapter 4 one-sheet, which has a completely different image! Also note the poster was attached to a thin linen backing, which was folded over to the front and stitched. This was done in some places because it let the posters last far longer, and in fact, that is probably the only reason this rare one-sheet has survived. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. As noted above, the poster (surely soon after it was first printed) was attached to a thin linen, and then the linen was folded over on each side, and it was stitched to the poster (so that it would survive from theater to theater). It was then folded in the ordinary way. There is fine paper loss along many folds, with some creases and small tears. There is a foreign stamp in the top right. If I owned this extremely rare poster, I would surely have a restorer remove it from the thin linen backing and properly linenback it, after which, it will display well, but bear the above in mind before bidding.
