The Horse's Mouth, the 1958 (released in the U.S. in 1959) Ronald Neame English artist painter romantic black comedy ("Smart Alec... Sheer madness and all Guinness!"; "The man's a genius... Take it from 'The Horse's Mouth'!"; "The 1959 Royal Performance Film"; "From the novel by Joyce Cary"; about an aging fine art painter who never sought commercial success, but he has sought the perfect "canvas" on which to paint his masterpiece, and he decides that the side of a building is what he needs, and that is just the beginning of a really unusual comedy with many plot twists and turns!) starring Alec Guinness, Kay Walsh, Renee Houston, Mike Morgan, Robert Coote, Michael Gough, and Ernest Thesiger (Doctor Pretorious from 1935's "Bride of Frankenstein", in one of his last roles). Note that Alec Guinness was 44 when he played this 60ish character who is totally unlikable, and yet, Guinness managed to show his humanity, and many people consider it one of his finest performances ever.
