(Learn More) The Wizard of Oz, the classic 1939 Victor Fleming family magical fantasy adventure musical ("MGM's miracle musical show of shows!"; "It's Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's Technicolor triumph!"; "Magnificent in its brilliant Technicolor splendor!"; "At Last It's Here Biggest Sensation Since "Snow White"!"; "The mighty miracle show that is the talk of America!"; "Amazing sights to see! The Tornado, Munchkinland, Horse of a Different Color, Startling Balloon Ascent, The Flying Monkeys, The Tree That Throws Apples"; "Gaiety! Glory! Glamour!"; based on the classic book of the same name by L. Frank Baum; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Judy Garland (as Dorothy), Frank Morgan (in the title role as The Wizard of Oz!), Ray Bolger (as The Scarecrow), Bert Lahr (as The Cowardly Lion), Jack Haley (as The Tin Man), Billie Burke (as Glinda, the Good Witch), Margaret Hamilton (as the Wicked Witch), Charley Grapewin, "The Munchkins", and Toto too! Note that MGM was worried about how well this movie would do at the box office, and they did something we don't remember seeing on any other major movie advertising! One of the taglines says "Biggest sensation since Snow White", which means MGM was advertising a Walt Disney movie, but that shows just how worried they were! Of course, they needn't have worried, because this was a timeless classic that has only improved with age. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this wonderful pressbook has the three interior sections it originally contained (it is missing the "special supplement" section [see below], but it does contain the three regular sections, the folder, and the herald, all of which are complete and uncut). One of the three regular sections, the exploitation section, is printed on a better quality paper, as is the folder, and the other two sections are printed on a newsprint-like paper, which ages like old newspapers. We previously auctioned another example of this pressbook that had all three regular sections, plus the "special supplement", and that one sold for $9,550! Finally note that this is surely the "Holy Grail" of pressbooks! Not only is it one of the most loved movies of all time, but MGM created this very large pressbook, contained in a wonderful folder (it has a full-color image on the cover which does not appear on any posters, and it has the main posters in full-color on the back cover), and the interior of the folder has lots more posters (and the tipped in herald), and then there were three interior sections (plus a "special supplement" for merchandising, which is not present in this example)! Maybe MGM was not sure of the movie's reception, so they wanted to "over-sell" it to theaters (which also might account for them writing "BIGGEST SENSATION Since 'SNOW WHITE'!" on the front cover (I don't think I have EVER seen a studio promote a movie from another studio before!). Note: We have 29 images of this pressbook, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 29 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 19. Condition: good, NO CUTS. The special supplement that was contained in this pressbook together with the three regular sections (which reads "Special Supplement Merchandising Exploitation on 'The Wizard of Oz'") is not present. Since it said "supplement", we assume it was not given out with all pressbooks, but was added after, and it is NOT present with this pressbook. The three regular sections and the folder are uncut. One of the sections, the exploitation section, is printed on better paper and is in pretty good condition. The other two sections are printed on newsprint and are very fragile and are separated at the spine. The folder has two small areas of paper loss at areas where the flap folds over (see our image). Obviously, one would prefer to find this pressbook in perfect condition, but it is extremely rare, and this contains so much great stuff, including the herald. But please read the above carefully and look at our many images before bidding on this pressbook. Learn More about condition grades
