An Original Vintage Folded Belgian World War II Poster (measures 23 1/2" x 32 3/4" [60 x 83 cm]) (Learn More)

Katyn, the circa 1944 Belgian World War II (WWII) poster (printed by the Nazi German occupying forces and with a tagline that translates to "Katyn, the forest of death") featuring information and images about the mass executions of an estimated 22,000 Polish nationalists by Russian secret police in 1940. The massacre was prompted by NKVD chief Lavrentiy Beria's proposal to execute all captive members of the Polish officer corps, which was approved by the Politburo and its leader, Joseph Stalin. Though the killings took place at several different locations, the massacre is named after the Katyn Forest in Russia, where some of the mass graves were first discovered. In a political move, the government of Nazi Germany announced the discovery of mass graves in 1943. The USSR claimed that the victims had been murdered by the Nazis and continued to deny responsibility for the massacres until 1990, when it officially acknowledged and condemned the perpetration of the killings by the NKVD, as well as the subsequent cover-up by the Soviet government.
