An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27" x 41") (Learn More)

The Day the Earth Stood Still, the classic 1951 Robert Wise science fiction (sci-fi) alien-contact thriller ("From out of space.... a warning and an ultimatum!"; "Strange power from another planet menaces the Earth!"; from the story by Harry Bates; about a super intelligent alien visiting the Earth, and mankind mistrusts him without reason; he is able to "pass" as a human, and he visits the world's greatest scientist, and when he is injured and taken to a hospital, he is rescued by his robot Gort) starring Michael Rennie (as Klaatu), Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe, Sam Jaffe, Billy Gray, Frances Bavier, and Lock Martin (as Gort the Robot). Note that the unusual music heard in this movie was achieved through the use of the musical instrument called a theramin, and audiences loved the eerie sounds it made, and it became standard in many science fiction movies thereafter to use this instrument in the same way!

Important Added Info: Note that this poster was purchased directly from a poster exchange in 1953! The consignor walked in to his local poster exchange as a teenager, and purchased it (for a few cents!). He taped it to the wall of his room, and after a few years he took it down and stored it carefully since. This helps account for why the colors of the poster are so bright and fresh!

Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and one of the following is true: either the poster had very minor defects, and was well backed, OR it had more significant defects, but they were well restored, OR it had some minor defects that were not completely restored, and are somewhat noticeable. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "pre-restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!).

The poster was in quite nice condition prior to linenbacking, with one defect. The poster had a NSS number written on the back, and someone at the poster exchange crossed it out with a blue marker. The marker writing very slightly bled through to the front in the top right center of the image. It was in the image background between the hand and the robot, and extends on to the robot's body in his shoulder and at the very bottom of his face mask. When this poster was un-backed, the bleed through was not very noticeable, but you can faintly see it. I had this poster backed by Studio C, and asked them to very lightly touch up the slight bleed through areas, which they did masterfully. I am 100% sure that nobody would notice this area, as it is hard to see, even if you were looking straight at it (and there is so little touch up on that area that it does not have a "painted look" in the slightest. I am also 100% sure that every other auction house would sell this poster without mentioning this defect, as the only way someone would see it, is by holding the poster up to a strong light. Other than the above defect, the poster was in nice condition. It had tape in many places around the edges of the poster in the blank borders only, but otherwise had only very minor fold wear, and the colors are bright and fresh. You can see some signs of the restoration in the blank borders (where the tape stains were covered over, but of course everyone would frame this poster by matting out the borders, so they would not show. I would think every collector would be happy to display this wonderful poster on their wall!
