Date Sold 12/26/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. A Linenbacked German Certificate (measures 13" x 17 1/2" [33 x 44 cm]) (Learn More) The Reich Labour Service (Reichsarbeitsdienst or RAD) was a major organization established in Nazi Germany in 1935 as an agency to help mitigate the effects of unemployment on the German economy, militarize the workforce and indoctrinate it with Nazi ideology. It was the official state labor service, and during World War II (WWII) compulsory service also included young women and the RAD developed to an auxiliary formation which provided support for the Wehrmacht armed forces. The organization was under the control of Konstantin Hierl, a high-ranking member of the NSDAP (Nazi party). Upon completion of their service, RAD members were given a commemorative certificate for "satisfying his labor service obligation", which featured their name, how long they worked and which had a printed signature of Konstantin Hierl along with the actual signature of the local Abteilungsfuher (department head). Artist: Hans Friedmann Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this German certificate! It has the name of the person who was awarded this certificate, along with how long they had worked, and a printed signature of Konstantin Hierl, along with the actual signature of the local Abteilungsfuher, who signed this certificate. It is likely extremely rare than many of these survived, because it is not something many Germans would have been proud of after 1945, and likely most were immediately destroyed after World War II (but some people must have kept theirs, because our consignor purchased this in Germany when he was on vacation theregt). What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The certificate had some faint brown dot stains around the edges and a crease in the upper left near the German seal. Overall, the certificate was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the certificate "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
