Date Sold 12/19/2023 Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. 4 Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Cards (LCs; measure 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Balloonland, the 1935 Ub Iwerks ComiColor animated animation cartoon short (a wonderful story of a magical "balloon land" that is high in the sky, where everything and everyone is a balloon, and they all fear the dreaded pincushion man who might pop them, but he lives in the woods, but then he manages to get into Balloonland, and their army of balloon soldiers must expel him before he pops everybody!). Note that the IMDb refers to this movie as "Balloon Land", but the advertising for it clearly shows it as "Balloonland", so we think they are simply wrong. After being instrumental in the creation of Mickey Mouse for Walt Disney, Ub Iwerks (full name Ubbe Iwerks) was hired away from Disney by P.A. Powers of Celebrity Productions to create a series of cartoons based on classic fairy tales (Iwerks was able to be hired away, both because he did not share in the financial rewards that Disney obtained from his work on Mickey Mouse and other early Disney characters, and also because Iwerks was barely credited for his work). Iwerks not only drew the ComiColor cartoons, but he also drew the one-sheets (and a 4-card full-color lobby card set) created to promote each of them. Unfortunately, this series of cartoons did not perform well at the box office, and late in the series, they switched from individual one-sheets for each cartoon to a stock poster with different titles printed in the middle. After 25 cartoons, Powers folded Celebrity Productions and Iwerks was forced to return to Disney. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one set of these cards, and they sold for $2,400! The person who purchased that set has now reconsigned it to us, so this is still the only set we have ever auctioned (and we have never auctioned any single cards either)! Also note that, as noted above, the wonderful art on these four lobby cards is by the legendary Ub Iwerks! Also note that only 4 lobby cards were produced for this cartoon short, and this is the complete set. It was quite common for studios to only make sets of four for short subjects or low budget movies (or re-releases of big budget movies), because it allowed them to print the sets at half the cost, and on shorts and low budget movies, they tried to save money any way they could (especially since it is likely few theaters even bothered to order lobby cards for these titles, since they were likely shown in addition to a better movie). Condition: very good. The cards have darkened somewhat, typical of all of the cards known that have survived from these ComiColor cartoons, and have minor creases in some of the corners and slight uneven discoloration in the blank borders.
