Originally a family-run ribbon manufacturer, Franz established a shoemaking business after visiting Paris, where he was inspired when buying novel shoe styles for his wife. Subsequently, the Bally & Co. shoe company was launched from his home, and by 1916, the company had 7000 employees and was producing four million pairs of shoes annually.
