An Original Theatrical Folded Japanese "B3" or "Nakazuri" Movie Poster (measures 15 3/4" x 20 1/4" [40 x 51 cm]) (Learn More)

Higanbana (released in English-speaking countries as "Equinox Flower"), the 1958 Yasujiro Ozu Japanese family relationship romantic marriage melodrama (about a Japanese father with three daughters, and each of them wants to marry someone of their own choosing, but he prefers traditional "arranged" marriages, although ultimately he partially gives in to changing times) starring Shin Saburi, Kinuyo Tanaka, Ineko Arima, Yoshiko Kuga, and Keiji Sada. Note that the plot of this movie has a great deal in common with the classic American play and movie, Fiddler on the Roof. Those were based on stories by Sholem Aleichem, which were written at the turn of the twentieth century but the first play version was not produced until 1964, after this movie was made, so it is unclear which one influenced which! Also note that Yasujiro Ozu was a legendary Japanese writer and director from 1920s to the 1960s. He is likely the second best regarded Japanese director after Akira Kurosawa, and many of his films are considered classics, and his masterpiece is "Tokyo Story" from 1953, although he made movies from 1927 to 1962. First release Japanese posters of any kind from any of his movies are beyond rare!

Important Added Info: Note that we have never auctioned an example of this poster before! The ink stamp at lower-right is an "Outdoor Advertising" permit which is dated 1959 (using the Japanese Showa-era calendar) but knowledgeable Japanese collectors believe this was printed in 1958 and simply used/stamped in 1959. Also, because the design matches a "local city version" Japanese B2, it is likely that this was created for use in cities other than Tokyo. Also note that this poster was folded at one time but it has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube.

Condition: good. The poster has discoloration scattered in various areas (more so around the edges, especially at bottom where there is older tape on back of the lower edge). There are light creases scattered throughout and there is an ink pad stamp at lower right (see our image). It is otherwise "mostly all there" and after proper restoration the poster will display well, but bear in mind the poster's condition and the cost of restoration before bidding on it.
