Chaplin was so popular in the 1910s that virtually every theater made an effort to include at least one of his shorts on their program, because it made such a difference in the attendance! We have seen other auctions misidentify these posters are being from 1914 first releases, but they are absolutely not. Still, these stock posters are incredibly rare themselves, so this is one of the only ways to obtain a 1910s Charlie Chaplin poster! They can also be somewhat duplicitous because they would promote a short as starring Chaplin when he might actually be just an uncredited character with little screen time! If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this poster! Also note that this one-sheet measures 28" x 42 1/4" [71 x 107 cm]. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was folded in half an extra time and had small paper loss at several crossfolds and a few bits of paper loss in the middle horizontal fold. It had pinholes, tears, and tiny paper loss around the edges, with paper loss in the bottom left corner and in the center of the left border. It had discoloration in two areas in the left of the white background area. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone backed the poster onto thin linen with no excess, and performed minimalist restoration to the above defects. One could certainly display this very rare poster as it is, or they could choose to have additional restoration performed. Either way, they will have a very rare poster to display on their wall!
