Date Sold 10/26/2021Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Alfred Hitchcock is perhaps the most famous English director of all-time, directing many groundbreaking and classic movies from 1921 to 1976. He would often appear briefly in his own movies as a gag. Some of his movies include: Rear Window (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film), North By Northwest, Psycho (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film), Vertigo, Strangers on a Train, Notorious, Rebecca (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film), Shadow of a Doubt, The 39 Steps, The Lady Vanishes, The Birds, Dial M for Murder, Lifeboat (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film), Spellbound, The Man Who Knew Too Much (he made this one TWICE!), The Trouble with Harry, and many, many more! He passed away in 1980 at the age of 80. AND Frances Dee was born in 1909, and she started as an extra while still a teenager. Her great beauty gained her more important roles, but she was almost always cast as a "good girl" (except in the pre-Code Blood Money, where she described her role as a "masochistic nymphomaniacal kleptomaniac"). But she usually was the second female lead in movies like Little Women, Of Human Bondage, and Becky Sharp. She had a few lead roles, but she met Joel McCrea while they were making a movie together in 1933, and they married that same year, and after that her marriage and their three sons took center stage in her life. She made sporadic movie and TV appearances in the 1940s and early 1950s (most notably in I Walked With a Zombie!), and then she completely retired in 1954, and McCrea basically retired in 1962, and the two lived together at their 300 acre ranch in Thousand Oaks, California (they were quite wealthy). They remained married until he passed away in 1990, and she passed away in 2004 at the age of 94. Important Added Info: What a cool candid this is! The snipe on the back describes how Frances Dee has come out of retirement (which was caused by her marriage to Joel McCrea and having children) to make a new movie, and then it says that she is "seen here with Alfred Hitchcock". It doesn't mention what the occasion was, and since we know they didn't make a movie together, we think it is surely from the previous year, when her husband Joel McCrea made Foreign Correspondent with Hitchcock! Also note that the movie mentioned on the back ("So Ends Our Night") is called "Flotsam" on the back of this still, which was the working title for that movie! Condition: good to very good.
