An Original Vintage Campaign Book (measures 9 1/2" x 12 1/4" [24 x 31 cm]; 30 pages) (Learn More)

UA Announcement of Product 1936-37, the 1936 United Artists campaign book, featuring upcoming United Artists movies and stars from movies that were planned for production by United Artists in the coming year. The campaign book includes mostly two-color images of ads for the major upcoming United Artists films including Dodsworth, Come and Get It (Frances Farmer), Pony Boy, The Garden of Allah (Dietrich), Ronald Colman (movie to be announced!), Rembrandt (Laughton), Knight Without Armor (Dietrich), I, Claudius (Laughton), Divorce of Lady X, Man Who Could Work Miracles, Three Time Loser (Tracy, Fonda & Sidney), Arabian Nights, Wuthering Heights (Sylvia Sidney & Charles Boyer!), 18 Walt Disney cartoons (9 Mickey Mouse and 9 Silly Symphonies), and much more! Note that, as was often the case with these campaign books, some of the movies advertised were either never made, had their titles changed before they were released, or were made with different casts than those announced in the campaign book! Note that, in the case of this particular campaign book, the movie "Three Time Loser" had its title changed to "You Only Live Once", and Spencer Tracy was dropped from the cast (I can't even imagine what character he was intended to play in the movie!). Also note that this campaign book announces Wuthering Heights with Sylvia Sidney & Charles Boyer, and of course, the movie was actually made with Laurence Olivier and Merle Oberon, and I can't even begin to imagine what it would've been like with Sidney and Boyer! Finally, note that the movie "I, Claudius", announced in this campaign book, was never completed (the studio abandoned it well into production). A BBC documentary was made in 1965, which included many of the completed scenes, and it would have been a fascinating movie!

Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this campaign book, and that was 13 years ago!

Note that this campaign book comes from a newly discovered collection of 15 campaign books, which we are auctioning in 15 individual auctions. They belonged to a man who was a poster artist for a specific theater in the early 1930s, and he would receive these campaign books and then take ideas for posters from them! This meant that sometimes he removed a specific ad or a specific page or pages, so several of these 15 have one or the other defect (or both), which is always clearly noted in the condition section below. While it is sad that they are not in perfect condition, one can also focus on the fact that it is wonderful that he saved these at all, when most theater owners and employees simply threw them out after the movies have played, which accounts for their extreme rarity. Note that not only was he active at a time when many great movies were released, but he also saved some of the books that had the absolute best art, as is immediately apparent when you look at the 15 pressbooks in this collection (in their separate auctions).

Condition: good to very good. There are many creases and scuffs on the front cover and some faint smudges and stains on the first interior page. Otherwise, the book is in pretty nice condition!
