Date Sold 5/5/2016Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Mini Window Card Movie Poster (WC; measures 8" x 14" [20 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Charlie Chan at the Opera, the 1936 H. Bruce Humberstone detective mystery crime thriller ("Warner Oland vs. Boris Karloff"; "Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers"; in a plot that heavily borrows from "The Phantom of the Opera", Karloff is an escapee from an insane asylum who had lost his memory, but now does remember, and hides in an opera house, determined to get revenge on those who tried to murder him 13 years earlier) starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Boris Karloff, Keye Luke (as Lee Chan), Charlotte Henry, Thomas Beck, Margaret Irving, and William Demarest. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Important Added Info: Note that first release 1936 movie paper from this Charlie Chan movie is incredibly rare. We have only auctioned a single one-sheet 25 years ago, and never any other first release U.S. posters from this movie until we received this mini window card! Condition: very good to fine. The card has the most minor of border wear. The theater that used this mini window card not only had a stamp at the top, but they also showed a second feature and they glued a newspaper ad to the right of the top blank area for that second feature, and also wrote in a tagline and "GIFT FORTY DOLLARS" (because the stamp indicates that Saturday was "GIFTNITE", a popular feature at movies during The Great Depression, when they would essentially hold lotteries at the theater, and $40 was a HUGE amount of money in 1936!). This added material in the normally top blank area is to our mind a great addition to the card, but certainly one could choose to mat it out if they were framing and displaying this wonderful mini window card.
