An Original Vintage Unfolded Window Card (WC; measures 14" x 22" [36 x 56 cm]) (Learn More) Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay) vs. Sonny Liston, the 1965 poster ("World heavyweight championship"; "Champion Cassius"; "Challenger Sonny"; "No Home TV"; "See it exclusively in this area in large screen close circuit TV"; "Direct from ringside - Boston Garden"; "SportsVision Inc") promoting a theatrical showing of the sports boxing match which took place on May 25th in Lewiston, Maine (it was to take place at Boston Garden in Boston but was moved because of legal reasons). The two fights between Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston for boxing's World Heavyweight Championship were among the most anticipated, watched and controversial fights in the sport's history. Sports Illustrated magazine named their first meeting as the fourth greatest sports moment of the twentieth century. The first bout was held in 1964 in Miami Beach, Florida. Clay was a 7-1 underdog but won in a major upset to become the World Heavyweight Champion. Their second fight was in 1965 which Ali won with a first-round knockout. The image of Ali taunting a downed Liston during this fight is one of the most iconic images in sport. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never auctioned this boxing window card before. With cards of this nature, one is always afraid that it might be a reproduction, but in the case of this wonderful window card, we are 100% certain it is authentic and is from before May 25, 1965, when this fight was shown on closed circuit TV for $5 per ticket! Note that this was the second fight these two fighters fought, so Muhammad Ali was referred to as "champion", but of course, it is from before he changed his name to Muhammad Ali, so he is listed as "Cassius Clay". Also note that the card has an incredible image at the top of these two boxers, taken from their first fight, which Ali won. This is surely one of the finest boxing window cards we have ever auctioned, if not THE finest! Condition: good. The card has some stains, smudges, and discoloration around the edges, with a much lesser amount within the image. There is paper loss in the center of the bottom border. This wonderful card could be displayed as it is, or certainly, restoration could be performed. Either way, the new owner will have a wonderful boxing poster to display on their wall!
