Date Sold 12/22/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Desert Vengeance, the 1931 Louis King romantic cowboy western melodrama ("The screen's greatest outdoor star in a breath-taking all dialog western!"; this was unusual for Buck Jones, because he does not play a hero!; rather he is an outlaw who gets swindled by a husband and wife team who pose as brother and sister, and when he discovers what they did, he virtually imprisons them, and treats them terribly!) starring Buck Jones ("The screen's greatest outdoor star!"), Barbara Bedford, Douglas Gilmore, Edward Brady, Albert J. Smith, Bob Fleming, and Slim Whitaker. Note that Buck Jones' white horse was named Silver (just like The Lone Ranger's later on!), and Silver made 73 movies with Buck Jones from 1922 until Jones' death in 1942 in the tragic Cocoanut Grove fire. But oddly, Silver was almost never billed on the posters for Buck Jones' movies as so many other famous horses (most especially Tom Mix's Tony) were! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an incredibly rare poster! We have only previously auctioned it twice before (the first one we auctioned was in only "fair to good" condition, and it sold for $1,110). We auctioned an example of it that was in "good to very good" condition in 2019, and that sold for $3,600 (and it is certainly one of the best cowboy movie posters ever!). Now we have been consigned a third example, but realize this is only the third time in our 30 years of auctioning, so it is still a very rare poster. It is likely so rare because this 1931 movie was quickly re-released in 1934 (as were several other Buck Jones westerns), and Columbia created all new posters for the re-release (with different art that showed Jones in profile in a gunfight), and it is likely that all of the remaining 1931 posters were destroyed at that time! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was surely once displayed against a corrugated board, because the back of the poster had evenly spaced lines of discoloration that showed through to the front in the light colored background areas and borders. The poster also had a long uneven tear that started in the bottom border and went up between the "S" and "K", and between the "E" and "D" of "BEDFORD", and then went through part of the "GE" of "VENGEANCE" and continued upward through the "S" of "JONES" and into the horse's mouth. There were also two small tears coming off that longer tear into the "GE" of "VENGEANCE". There was a diagonal tear at bottom center starting into the bottom center of the second "B" of "BARBARA", and going left to the top of the "i" of "Directed". The poster had a fine diagonal razor cut in the bottom of Jones' hat, running into the green background to the right. It had small paper loss at the crossfolds and some small areas of paper loss on parts of the left of the middle horizontal fold and some tiny bits of paper loss on parts of the other folds. It had some tears and areas of paper loss around the edges. It had a small circular area of paper loss in the green background to the right of the upper part of the horse's head. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. A really talented restorer did a wonderful job repairing the above defects. The poster displays wonderfully, and it does not have a "restored look", and even from close up, one does not see much signs of restoration. It will display wonderfully on the new owner's wall, but please read the above carefully before bidding on this rare and desirable poster! Learn More about condition grades
