An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Japanese "B2" Movie Poster (measures 20 1/4" x 28 5/8" [51 x 73 cm]) (Learn More) Ukiusa (released in English-speaking countries as "Floating Weeds"), the 1959 Yasujiro Ozu Japanese theater stage acting family relationship father-son melodrama (about the star of a traveling theater troupe who goes to a seaside town to perform, and living in that town is the star's girlfriend from many years ago, who became pregnant by him and had a son, and she told him that the famous actor was his uncle and not his father; now, the actor's present girlfriend is jealous and worried about him rekindling his relationship with his former girlfriend, and that is only the beginning of a very complicated movie!) starring Ganjiro Nakamura, Machiko Kyo, Haruko Sugimura, Ayako Wakao, and Hiroshi Kawaguchi. Note that this movie is a remake of director Ozu's 1934 movie called "A Story of Floating Weeds", and most people consider this movie to be one of the greatest movies of all time, from any country! Also note that Yasujiro Ozu was a legendary Japanese writer and director from 1920s to the 1960s. He is likely the second best regarded Japanese director after Akira Kurosawa, and many of his films are considered classics, and his masterpiece is "Tokyo Story" from 1953, although he made movies from 1927 to 1962. First release Japanese posters of any kind from any of his movies are beyond rare! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare "country of origin" poster for this Japanese movie that we have never auctioned before! A Japanese poster expert tells us that this poster was not printed by Daiei, but by a company contracted by them for an alternative printing for the first release (likely in cities other than Tokyo), and it has a different image than the regular Japanese B2. Also note that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: good. The poster was folded twice horizontally and vertically. It has brown dot staining along the two horizontal folds (see our image). It has tiny pinholes in the star's image at upper center and some tears of varying lengths around the edges. There are creases and tears in portions of the upper horizontal fold with approximately 5" of separation at the right edge of the upper horizontal fold. The separation and other defects mentioned above have been backed with clear tape. The poster is otherwise "all there" and it is the kind of poster that responds really well to restoration. It is likely that much or most of the brown dot staining can be removed chemically, and after proper restoration to the above-mentioned defects the poster will display well, but bear in mind the very rare poster's condition and the cost of restoration before bidding on it.
