Date Sold 7/9/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Unfolded Movie Paper Banner (measures 24" x 82" [61 x 208 cm]) (Learn More) Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan and the Leopard Woman, the 1946 Kurt Neumann jungle action adventure thriller ("SWORN to bring back Tarzan's body for fiendish jungle ritual!"; "Her eyes promise love... her lips sneer death!"; "Original story and Screen Play by Carroll Young"; "Based on characters created by Edgar Rice Burroughs") starring Johnny Weissmuller (in the title role as Tarzan; the 1924 Olympic swimming champion who is best remembered for playing Jungle Jim and for his role in this series), Brenda Joyce (as Jane), Johnny Sheffield (as Boy), Acquanetta (in the title role as the Leopard Woman), Edgar Barrier, and Dennis Hoey. Note that Maureen O'Sullivan tired of playing Jane in the Tarzan movies, and in 1943, two Tarzan movies were made with no Jane at all, and in 1945, she was replaced by Brenda Joyce, who played the role in five movies. Also note that apparently "Cheetah" had a terrible agent when he signed for this movie, because he received no billing at all, even though he is on the posters and other advertising, and plays a prominent role in the movie! Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this first release paper banner! Also note that paper banners like these were first made in 1945, at the end of World War II. At first, they were printed on thin one-sheet paper, but they fell apart quickly, and in 1946, the studios changed and made them on a heavy paper stock (heavier than half-sheets or inserts), and those survived well, and they continued to make them well into the 1960s, with a few in the 1970s and possibly later. But THIS is one of the earliest "regular" paper banners ever made, which surely helps account for its extreme rarity! In addition, it has an NSS stamp on the back, and it is printed on a paper stock that is brown on the back rather than white, as most such paper banners were printed on soon after this one. Note that this banner is a silkscreen printed poster with an actual black & white photo which has neatly been "tipped in" (glued to the left side of the poster). Paper banners were sometimes made in this way at that time, and it makes for a striking poster, and few people would realize that it is not printed on a single piece, unless they examine the poster closely. Note that the silkscreen portions of this poster usually pick up scuff marks far more easily than other posters of this period (this was caused by the method of silkscreen printing, and is very common on these posters, and is not considered a major defect, unless it is very noticeable or distracting). Also note that this poster is very long, but because it is not very wide, it can be sent in a regular size tube. However, it can NOT be combined with other rolled posters, and must be either sent by itself (or combined with other items that are exactly like this). Please bear this in mind before bidding on this poster. Note that this poster(which is NOT linenbacked) ships in a standard sized tube. However, because it is very long, it CAN'T be combined with other posters that ship in standard tubes (either linenbacked or non-linenbacked), ONLY with other posters exactly like this one. Please bear this in mind before bidding on this poster. Condition: good. There are smudges, scuffs, and stains scattered throughout the banner. They are not all that distracting, and of course, it can be restored. There is a tear in the left of the top border that has paper tape on the front and back. The poster was printed in 1946 and then was reused when the movie was re-released in 1950, and someone crossed out the original NSS number in the left border with grease pencil and wrote in the reissue NSS number. But this IS an ultra rare first release 1946 paper banner that was simply reused in 1950. Learn More about condition grades
