3 Original 1938 Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Stills (Learn More)

Song of Freedom, the 1936 (released in the U.S. in 1938) J. Elder Wills English Hammer black African American opera musical melodrama ("Robeson In His Most Memorable Role!-Cast of Thousands In $500,000 Epic!"; about a black English dockworker who has a great voice, and becomes a major opera star, but then he finds a family medallion that causes him to go back to Africa to try to trace his family's origins) starring Paul Robeson, Elisabeth Welch, Esme Percy, Robert Adams, and George Mozart. Note that we have had trouble finding much information about the American release of this movie. It was one of the first productions of English Hammer Films (yes, THAT Hammer Films, which later became famous for its horror movies!), but it is difficult to know when it was released in the U.S., and by what company. The IMDb says it was re-edited in 1938 and released by Treo Film Exchanges, but we have never heard of that company, and the IMDb says it solely released three movies, including this one, over a three year period, which sounds doubtful! The only U.S. movie paper we have ever seen from this movie is a one-sheet and a lobby card, and both have "Song of Freedom, Inc. presents" printed on them, and we think those are surely from the first U.S. release, which did occur in 1938 (verified by 1938 newspaper ads). If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here.

Important Added Info: Note that we were just consigned a number of groups of stills from all-black movies of the 1930s and 1940s. Such stills are far more rare than those of mainstream movies of the same time period, because the movies only played in all-black theaters, and few posters, lobby cards or stills survive from many of these movies. This is a rare opportunity to purchase stills from this movie!

Condition: fair to good. The stills were exposed to moisture at one time and have deterioration and paper loss along portions of the lower edge (see our image).
