An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Campaign Book (measures 9 1/4" x 12 1/4" [23 x 31 cm]; 36 pages) (Learn More) MGM 1928-29, the 1928 studio campaign book ("The Metro Goldwyn Mayer lion, the greatest star on the screen") featuring images and information on upcoming MGM movies and stars. Note that, at this point, MGM clearly had the greatest lineup of stars of any studio, so they quite naturally focused this campaign book on those stars, devoting a full page image to many of them, with a montage of artwork and color photos in the borders surrounding those images. The stars that received this full page treatment included: Lon Chaney Sr., Greta Garbo, Ramon Novarro, Buster Keaton, Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy (Laurel & Hardy), Our Gang, Marion Davies, William Haines, and others! The pages facing the full page images were filled with many small images and text about their upcoming movies. See the images we took of interior pages to get a good sense of how this book is presented. We wish we could have pictured every page! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that I (Bruce Hershenson) have collected studio yearbooks for decades, and I have never seen a bound version of this campaign book! It is quite possible that for this year, MGM solely printed it for inclusion in exhibitor magazines (or of course, it is also possible that there were bound yearbooks, but they are incredibly rare). Either way, this is a great rarity! IMPORTANT! The studios would send copies of campaign books to many theater owners, and it appears that very few examples have survived. IN ADDITION TO SENDING THEM TO THEATER OWNERS, THEY WOULD SOMETIMES HAVE AN EXTRA PRINT RUN OF THE INTERIOR PAGES RUN OFF, WHICH WOULD BE THEN SENT TO AN EXHIBITOR MAGAZINE AND INCLUDED AS AN ADDITION TO A REGULAR ISSUE OF THAT MAGAZINE! In the case of this particular magazine, all of the pages of the magazine were carefully removed (including the covers and all the non-campaign book material). I have seen many examples of these where people sold the remaining pages as a "campaign book", which it certainly basically is, but realize that it is from the over-run that was created so that it could be included in the magazine. Please do not bid on this item unless you have read the above very carefully, and realize you are getting a campaign book removed from a magazine, and not the bound campaign book that was created in a separate print run. Condition: good to very good. As noted above, the book was part of an exhibitor magazine, and the rest of the magazine was carefully removed. There is nothing on the spine, because that originally had information about the magazine, but otherwise, this book is in nice condition (see our images). Learn More about condition grades
