A Linenbacked Spanish Special Poster (measures 20 3/4" x 29" [53 x 74 cm]) (Learn More)

Union Espanola de Explosivos 1951 (literally translates to "Spanish Union of Explosives 1951"), the 1951 Spanish poster featuring Francisco Ribera art of a couple and their dog coming back from a successful hunt for rabbits and birds. The Union Espanola de Explosivos was founded in 1896 (a merger of companies including one founded by Alfred Noble, the inventor of dynamite, and the man who endowed the Nobel Prizes, including, ironically, the Nobel Peace Prize) and produced gunpowder for both civilian and military use. We imagine this poster was designed to show that ammunition was also used in non-military ways by hunters, and perhaps posters like these were displayed in places where ammunition was sold (we did not find another example of this poster, but this company produced many similar posters over the years). If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
Artist: Francisco Ribera
Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned this Spanish poster once before, and now that poster has been reconsigned to us, so it is still the only example of this poster we have ever auctioned!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster was never folded. It had some small tears and scuffs around the edges, with a 1" vertical tear in the bottom center of the image, and some scratches above the "D" of "DE" at lower left. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
