Auction History Result SOUTH SEA ROSE 1sheet Date Sold 7/1/1997Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh) (Learn More) South Sea Rose, the 1929 Allan Dwan tropical island New England romantic comedy melodrama ("All talking Fox Movietone romance with songs."; "Story by Tom Cushing"; about a straight-laced sea captain who meets a beautiful young woman on a voyage to a tropical island, and he marries her and brings her back to New England, where her native ways shock the local residents) starring Lenore Ulric (in the title role as Rosalie Dumay), Charles Bickford (in his first movie role), Kenneth MacKenna, Tom Patricola, J. Farrell MacDonald (billed as "Farrell MacDonald"), and Elizabeth Patterson. Note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. Also note that Charles Bickford had been a stage actor in touring companies for a dozen years before this. He got a starring Broadway role and was noticed by Hollywood, and Irving Thalberg talked him into making this movie at age 38, which he considered way beneath his talents, although he had kind words for co-star Lenore Ulric, one of the few actors he did speak well of!
