An Original Vintage Linenbacked Belgian World War II Poster (measures 24" x 31 3/4" [61 x 81 cm]) (Learn More) Ersatzkommando der Waffen SS (literally translates to "Replacement Command of the Waffen SS"), the 1943 Belgian World War II (WWII) recruitment poster created by the Nazi German occupying forces (likely aimed at Flemish men), and featuring Bertau art of a giant SS symbol literally slaying a Jewish/Bolshevik red dragon, with the silhouette of a German soldier holding a grenade in the background. Note that this is a fascinating poster on many levels. During World War II, Germany had a massive need for more soldiers, and they actively recruited in some of the countries they occupied, including Belgium, where they targeted Flemish men. The poster has really wild art of the SS symbol (worn by Nazi members of the Schutzstaffel, the paramilitary brand of the Nazi Party that operated throughout German occupied Europe) literally stabbing a fallen red dragon, which has human remains by it, indicating that the dragon has been eating its victims. The dragon has a chain around its neck with both a Jewish star and a red Communist star with a hammer and sickle emblem. If you wonder why a dragon was chosen as the symbol, it was likely partly because the dragon was associated with the beast from The Book of Revelations, and also with Satan, and of course, Germany's greatest folk hero, Siegfried, slew a dragon, and no doubt the poster designer was looking for those parallels! Artist: Bertau Important Added Info: Note that this remarkable poster, which we have never auctioned before, is surely incredibly rare. We could find images of it on the Internet, but we don't know if they are images of surviving examples. We found a link to a German auction, which auctioned a postcard-sized version of this poster for $400! It was consigned to us from the owner of the amazing collection of political and war posters which we auctioned on November 19, 2017. He "held back" a few of his most rare and most interesting posters, but he has now consigned those remaining ones to us, and they are being auctioned in this December Major Auction (and this is one of them). It is likely that this poster and the others can only be found in museum collections (if they can be found at all), and this is a very rare opportunity to obtain this poster. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was folded across the middle and it had tears and some tiny bits of paper loss across that fold. It had small tears, pinholes, and darkening around the edges. It had paper loss in the left of the bottom blank border that measured approximately 1" x 2 1/2", and which affected the bottom left of the "W". There were pinholes around the edges of the poster and a number of pinholes in the top center of the poster, mostly in the top of the "SS" letters. There were some smudges and faint stains scattered in the poster. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Learn More about condition grades
