An Original Undated (probably 1946, from the first release of this movie in Italy; see below) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Italian One-Panel (known in Italy as a "2 Fogli") Movie Poster (1p; measures 39 1/4" x 54 1/2" [100 x 138 cm]) (Learn More) The Flame of New Orleans, the 1941 Rene Clair Louisiana romantic love triangle comedy (about a beautiful cabaret singer who can't choose between a rich banker and a dashing sea captain) starring Marlene Dietrich, Bruce Cabot, Roland Young, Mischa Auer, Andy Devine, Melville Cooper, Eddie Quillan, Laura Hope Crews, Frank Jenks, Theresa Harris, Clarence Muse, and Shemp Howard (in an uncredited role as an "Oyster Bed Cafe Waiter"!) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Carfagni Important Added Info: Note that we can't say for certain when this movie was first released in Italy. It COULD have been released in 1941, just prior to World War II, but it also could have been released between 1946 and 1948, right after World War II. Certainly, Dietrich was a major European star, and it seems extremely likely there would have been a big demand for this movie in Europe in 1941, but it was not released in France until 1946, so that makes us lean more toward it being a 1946 release, but the printer on the poster is "A.P.E. Roma", which we have seen on 1930s Italian posters, so that would make us lean toward a 1941 release! If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note that it is difficult to accurately date Italian posters, and some unmarked re-release posters can be extremely difficult to distinguish from first releases, so please bear that in mind before you place a bid. We used our best information to date this poster, but we can't always guarantee that the Italian posters we sell are not from an unmarked re-release, but this will only prove to be true in a very tiny number of cases. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had darkened somewhat. It had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds. It had some tiny tears in the vertical fold between the middle and bottom crossfolds, with almost no wear on the other foldlines. It had some faint diagonal scuff marks in the right of Dietrich's hair. It had some faint water staining scattered in the lower half of the left blank border, but solely in the blank border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style" (with no excess), meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Certainly, I would think almost every collector could happily display this great poster just as it is, but an option would be to have a talented restorer re-back it. Either way, the new owner of this poster will have a really wonderful poster that may also be the only (or one of the only few) surviving example (because Italian posters from the 1940s are extremely rare!
