Gunga Din, the classic 1939 George Stevens British-in-India military romantic war melodrama ("Inspired by Rudyard Kipling's poem"; "Inspired by Rudyard Kipling's heroic lines"; "Out of the stirring glory of Kipling's seething India they roar - three fighting, loving, swaggering sons of the lusty Battalions... in the picture that's too big for words!"; "The giant of all romance - action shows!"; "Red-blood and gunpowder heroes... roaring for battle or ready for love!"; "From a Story by Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur"; note that IMDB lists William Faulkner as an uncredited writer for this movie) starring Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Sam Jaffe (in the title role as Gunga Din), Eduardo Ciannelli, Joan Fontaine, and Robert Coote

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that first release large posters from this movie are extremely rare. We have only once before auctioned a first release three-sheet from this movie and now it has been reconsigned to us, so this is still the only example we have ever auctioned, and we have also never auctioned a six-sheet! Of course, three-sheets and six-sheets from ANY classic 1930s movies (not just this one) are far more rare than one-sheets, and this is a rare opportunity to display a three-sheet from a great movie on your wall!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had small tears and tiny paper loss on parts of several folds, with some smudges in the title and tack holes around the edges, and a few tack holes scattered in the poster. It had brown stains scattered across the bottom blank border, where there had been tears, with one tiny brown stain in the bottom center of the image background. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. Someone backed the poster many years ago, and they did fairly slight restoration to the tears and paper loss on the folds and crossfolds, and they completely left alone the stains in the bottom blank border. Certainly, I could see many collectors choosing to display this incredibly rare poster exactly as it is, or one could have additional restoration performed, either with or without re-backing the poster. Finally, note that the original linenbacker left 1" of additional linen in the borders, beyond the regular excess linen, and there are many creases in that extra excess linen, but of course, it does not affect the poster at all. That could easily be trimmed off, or one could leave it as it is.
