Original Vintage Theatrical Folded One-Sheet (27" x 41") (Learn More) The Coward, the 1915 Reginald Barker & Thomas H. Ince silent Civil War military melodrama (about a Confederate soldier in the Civil War who was terrified of the war and runs away from battle only to find himself behind the enemy lines) starring Frank Keenan, Charles Ray, Gertrude Claire, Patricia Palmer, Nick Cogley, Charles K. French, Margaret Gibson, John Gilbert, and Bob Kortman. It is very interesting to note that there are tremendous similarities between this movie and Buster Keaton's "The General", so much so that one would have to assume Keaton was inspired by this movie to make "The General". Also note that John Gilbert was billed as "Jack Gilbert" in this movie (which is how he was billed in movies at this time). He had uncredited roles in 1915 and then had credited roles in 1916, but he still spent the next several years not achieving major stardom. One of his first major roles was in 1922 when he starred in an early version of "The Count of Monte Cristo". Of course, he would become a top star of the mid 1920s, and then he would co-star with a very young Greta Garbo, and the rest, as they say, is history! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography.
