Mai 2012 Demmin (literally translates to "May 8th, 2012 Demmin"), the 2012 German poster promoting an Antifa gathering to take place in the city of Demmin in remembrance of the mass suicides that took place there near the end of World War II (WWII). On May 1st of 1945, hundreds of people killed themselves in the town of Demmin during a mass panic that was provoked by atrocities committed by soldiers of the Soviet Red Army. Although death toll estimates vary, it is acknowledged to be the largest mass suicide ever recorded in Germany. The tagline on the poster ("Nazis into the Peene") refers to the Penne river, where many of the suicides took place. The Antifa movement is a political movement of autonomous, self-styled anti-fascist groups. Antifa groups are known for their militant protest tactics, including property damage and physical violence. They tend to be anti-government and anti-capitalist, and they are predominantly far left and militant left, including anarchists, communists and socialists.
