An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel Movie Poster (measures 44" x 60 1/2") (Learn More) The Legion of the Condemned, the 1928 William A. Wellman silent World War I (WWI) military spy espionage romantic airplane aviation thriller ("A toast to those who laugh at death"; "They courted Danger - they laughed at Death - these men of - The Legion of the Condemned"; "Story by John Monk Saunders"; about a young American man who, during World War I, finds his girl in the arms of a German officer, and he joins the French Air Legion, and later he is ordered to drop a female spy behind enemy lines, and it turns out that it is his girlfriend, who was gaining information on the German he saw her with, so they are reconciled, but then both are captured by the Germans!) starring Fay Wray, Gary Cooper, Barry Norton, Lane Chandler, Francis McDonald, George Voya, and Freeman Wood. William Wellman had made "Wings" the previous year, and Paramount wanted him to use as much of the outtake footage from "Wings" as possible, so they could "get their money's worth". But when the film was ready, Wings was still doing wonderfully at the box office, and the studio ordered the stock footage cut out, so it wouldn't hurt how well Wings was doing! Note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Jacno Important Added Info: Note that this French one-panel measures 44" x 60 1/2" and is linenbacked. Condition: good. This poster was linenbacked, but it was either NOT linenbacked by a very talented restorer, OR it was linenbacked many years ago, and has received rough handling over the years, OR it had fairly significant defects that were not well restored. If it was restored, you can clearly see signs of the restoration even from a distance. This is a poster that would surely benefit from additional professional restoration. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "pre-restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). The poster had many creases and tears throughout. There was a hole in Fay Wray's cheek at upper right. There were many light stains and smudges throughout. The person who backed the poster did slight restoration, but you can still see many signs of the defects, although, surprisingly, the poster could still be displayed "as is", as the aging does not drastically take away from the appreciation of the poster (its many defects give it a severe aged look). If I owned the poster, I would almost surely have it re-backed by a talented professional. It would end up heavily restored, but it would look great, and this is both a great early French movie poster, and an important part of film history (an important early film in the careers of William Wellman and Gary Cooper)!
