An Original Vintage Theatrical 8 1/4" x 10" [21 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More)

Micro-Phonies, the 1945 Edward Bernds slapstick comedy short ("Turn on the heat... Turn on the fun... Turn on the roars!"; "A Columbia Short-Subject Presentation"; in this entry, the Stooges work at a radio station, where a pretty singer records a song, but doesn't want her family to find out; Curly dresses as a woman and imitates the singer while mimicking the record, which catches the attention of a popular violinist, who wants them to perform the song at her party; Moe smashes the record over Curly's head, so Curly is unable to perform, but the real singer helps them out) starring The Three Stooges (Moe Howard, Curly Howard, and Larry Fine), Christine McIntyre, Symona Boniface, and Gina Carrado. Note that Harry Edwards is credited as the writer and director of this movie on some promotional material. However, it was Edward Bernds who actually wrote and directed the film. A friend of Bernds tells us that when asked about the mix-up, Bernds replied "It beats the hell out of me"! Also, note that this was the third film Bernds directed with the Stooges, but they released it first as it was Curly's strongest performance of the period. After his stroke, Curly had difficulty remembering his lines and Bernds smartly devised a script where Curly does a lot of lipsynch instead of spoken lines (which greatly improved his confidence and performance).
