Date Sold 6/8/2014Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Movie Production Handbook (measures 8 1/2" x 11"; 100 pages) (Learn More) Samson and Delilah, the classic 1949 Cecil B. DeMille Biblical religious sword-and-sandal doomed romance adventure epic ("The staggering story of strength... And seduction... Of the mightiest mortal who ever lived!"; "Based upon the history of Samson & Delilah in the Holy Bible, Judges 13-16; The greatest love story since the beginning of man... and woman!"; "Cecil B. DeMille's Masterpiece") starring Hedy Lamarr (in the title role as Delilah), Victor Mature (in the title role as Samson), George Sanders (as The Saran of Gaza), Angela Lansbury (as Semadar), Henry Wilcoxon, and "a Cast of Thousands" (usually this is a major overstatement, but in the case of this movie, it is surely accurate!) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: This is really funky! Its entire purpose is to teach the cast and crew of this movie about how things were in the Biblical time the movie was set in, and there is also a ton of Babylonian and Egyptian words, with explanations of their meanings. In the foreword to this, they explain that they have to give a phonetic spelling to these words, because they were written in different alphabets that don't translate (for example, "CH" is a guttural sound, similar to the German "ach" of the "ch" in the Scotch word "loch"). We imagine this was commissioned by Cecil B. DeMille, because we can't imagine anyone else who would care this much about being historically accurate. Note that this item comes from the estate of Paul Kohner, who as an agent for hundreds of actors, writers, directors, etc., was constantly sent scripts to "pitch" to his clients or to the studios, and therefore we are 100% certain that this is an original script created at the time it was written. Kohner had a remarkable life! Kohner was born in Czechoslovakia in 1902, and he was a journalist working at his father's newspaper. He came to Hollywood after interviewing Carl Laemmle, who gave him a job as a publicity man. He became the head of Universal's European department in Berlin, and returned to the U.S. in the early 1930s, and left Universal in 1938, becoming a publicity agent. Among his clients were some of the greatest film stars ever, including Greta Garbo, Ingrid Bergman, and also great directors such as John Huston and Billy Wilder. He had close personal friendships with many of his clients, and he saved every bit of correspondence and paper work from his agency! He was married to actress Lupita Tovar from 1932 until his death in 1988. Amazingly, after his death, few institutions showed interest in his immense files, and only a small amount ended up being saved, with a lot literally thrown away! Our consignor purchased the item offered here from Mr. Kohner's estate in 1989, and he has held it until now, when he has consigned several items from Mr. Kohner's estate to eMoviePoster.com, and each item is being auctioned separately.
