An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Argentinean Movie Poster (measures approximately 29" x 43") (Learn More) Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, the classic 1958 Alfred Hitchcock San Francisco California suspense obsessive love crime mystery thriller ("Alfred Hitchcock's Masterpiece"; "Based upon the novel D'Entre Les Morts by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac"; "Music by Bernard Herrmann"; about a man with a fear of heights who is caught up in a murder, or is he?, and he meets a woman who looks very similar to the "dead girl", and he becomes obsessed with solving the mystery) starring James Stewart (Jimmy Stewart), Kim Novak (in a dual role), Barbara Bel Geddes, Tom Helmore, and Henry Jones. Note that John Whitney Sr. (who did the spiral title sequence for the movie) also did the spiral art for the posters from this movie, which was utilized by the poster artist Saul Bass. Also note that Alfred Hitchcock did not make a final decision on what to name this movie until the last minute! At various times, it had working titles of Darkling I Listen, Fear and Trembling, From Among the Dead, and Illicit Darkening. Many of the early advertising stills don't have a title at all, but say "An Alfred Hitchcock Production". Personally, we think "Vertigo" is a better title than any of those other four! Finally, note that critical acclaim for this movie has consistently risen in the years since it was first released. In fact, in the 2012 "Sight and Sound" poll of top movie critics, Vertigo was declared to be the number one film of all time, over Citizen Kane, and every other masterpiece! Important Added Info: This Argentinean poster measures approximately 29" x 43" and is linenbacked. Condition: very good. This poster was linenbacked, and one of the following is true: either the poster had minor defects, and was well backed, OR it had more significant defects, but they were extremely well restored, OR it had some very minor defects that were not completely restored, and are somewhat noticeable. You can tell which of the above is the case for this particular poster by reading our "pre-restoration" description and also by looking at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!). Note that we gave this condition grade to a very few posters that were in pretty good condition prior to linenbacking, but which were not all that well linenbacked, and which could be fairly easily re-backed with only minor additional restoration. The poster had creases and some faint smudges along some foldlines. There was a slightly diagonal vertical crease running alongside the vertical foldline starting in the middle of the red oval area at center and running down to the bottom foldline. There was some small paper loss in the middle of the bottom border in the vertical foldline. There were pinholes in the corners. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer linenbacked the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the tiny defects, but they are really not at all distracting (and any restorer could easily touch them up without re-backing the poster).
